Bringing you stories from and pertaining to Lil Rhody. 'Cause hey we all know everything and everyone has a connection to Rhode Island in some way, form, or fashion.
PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Pawtucket is looking ahead to their new high school, but for it to go up, McCoy Stadium has to come down.
On Tuesday, local officials revealed the first look at how the city’s new high school will sit in the ballpark’s space. It’s being called the biggest new school project Rhode Island has ever seen.
McCoy Stadium has sat vacant since 2019 when the Pawtucket Red Sox rebranded and moved to Worcester. Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien said the stadium will start to be torn down this year.
Last month, the R.I. Education Department approved $1 billion for school construction projects statewide.
It’s unclear when crews will break ground on the new school in Pwtucket, but a $330 million bond has already been approved by voters and the city saw the first $50 million of that on Wednesday.
State leaders say the new school will be “top-notch” and serve nearly 2,200 students. It will also include a career and technical center to make sure students can reach their full potential.
“It’s not just what happens outside of the classroom, inside the classroom, around the classroom. it all matters,” R.I. Education Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green said. “We’re saying to our kids that where they learn matters. How they utilize the building to learn matters.”
There was recently hope the area would reopen as a ballpark when efforts to save the stadium were spearheaded by real estate mogul Stefan Soloviev.
He offered to buy McCoy Stadium for its appraised value, plus an additional $1 million, but was met with resistance from Grebien, who claimed it was far too late to save the ballpark.
“Unfortunately, there has been no productive dialogue between your engineers and ours, despite repeated requests,” Grebien wrote. “We believe it is time for our respective organizations to move forward.”
“While we are sure that you share our disappointment that this thought process didn’t lead to the final result we may have hoped, we are grateful for the interest you and your team showed in our community,” he continued. “We hope there will be other opportunities to partner with your generous organization in the future.”
When 12 News reached out to the Soloviev Group for a response to that letter, they called it an excuse and were disappointed with his decision.
