About our city
Pawtucket, RI
Pawtucket, Rhode Island, has a rich history that dates back to its founding in the 17th century. Originally inhabited by the Narragansett and Wampanoag tribes, the area was settled by Europeans in the 1670s. The town was officially incorporated in 1786.
Pawtucket grew rapidly in the 19th century due to the Industrial Revolution, becoming a significant textile manufacturing hub. The Blackstone River provided the necessary waterpower for mills, and Pawtucket became known for innovations in the textile industry.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the city continued to thrive, attracting a diverse population of immigrants who contributed to its industrial workforce. The famous Slater Mill, established in 1793 by Samuel Slater, is often regarded as the birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution.
Throughout the 20th century, Pawtucket faced economic challenges as manufacturing declined, but it has worked to revitalize its economy and community. Today, Pawtucket is known for its cultural heritage, historic sites, and the arts, making it a vibrant part of Rhode Island's identity.
